I woke up this morning thinking of the Bob Marley song, Three Little Birds.
Don’t worry about a thing, ‘cause every little thing, is going to be alright.
The first time I had heard this song was in the 2007 movie I Am Legend with Will Smith. A post-apocalyptic science fiction film based on a doctor, Neville (Will Smith), the last human in New York City, who was trying to find a cure for the disease that has taken everyone and changed them into zombie like creatures.
Side note, Neville’s sole companion was a German Shepard named Samantha, of course I loved the dog.
In the movie, he could be out of his house during the day, but at night, the creatures would come out, so he and Samantha would hide in the house until sunrise. When he settled in for the evening, he would listen to the song Three Little Birds. The lyrics are:
Rise up this mornin' Smiled with the risin' sun Three little birds Pitch by my doorstep Singin' sweet songs Of melodies pure and true Saying', (this is my message to you)
Singing' don't worry 'bout a thing 'Cause every little thing gonna be alright
The character Neville, even though he was alone and things seemed hopeless for years, never gave up. With his research, he kept making small changes and tried to keep moving in the right directions and, of course, at the end of the movie, he found the cure.
Although this is a movie, and the writers can create whatever ending they want, this is still the same in life. I can not tell you what will happen in my world tomorrow, or next week, or within the year, but I know that I will search for the good as much as I can. I will make sure I make the small changes I need to be the best me I can be.
Each of us has this power. A quote that I have at my desk at work is Take One Little Right Action. I like this, because I know I cannot control everything that happens to me, but I can control how I view it.
Each of us has the power to control how we view things, how we interpret them, and how we react to them. Now, I would love to say that I woke up one day and decided to see everything through rose-colored glasses, but that is not true. When I decided to change my mindset on how I view my world, it took practice, and I still am making the small changes every day to see my world in a positive light through the eyes of peace and love.
God wants us to be happy, to love one another, to live in peace. We have things that happen to us or family/friends, whether it is an illness, a bad relationship, loss of a job, or financial struggles… this list could go on and on, but we have to take the little right actions to change ourselves to find good.
I will admit, I have had financial issues all my life. I have claimed bankruptcy twice; once when I was a young single mom and once after a divorce. Although it has been years ago, I was still trying to make excuses why. Feeling that I just had bad luck, I am never meant to have money, I was the victim; when actually, I allowed myself to overspend and made poor financial choices.
Recently, I decided that I have to make the right changes to turn around my finances. Instead of saying ‘I am underpaid’, I am going to be thankful for what I have. Instead of making impulsive decisions and just saying ‘I deserve’, I am going to take my time and make sure I am good investing in whatever I choose, even simple things like TV services, eating out, or buying clothes.
In order to change something, you need to change. Sounds silly, but I have wanted change before and yet I didn’t want to do anything to change. In our society, we are used to instant gratification, we don’t have to wait, we just want things to happen when we want it to happen.
I have learned, just because I want it, doesn’t mean it is good for me or the right time for me. That is where faith comes in, I have to trust in God that he is taking care of me, that he will lead me through, that he will turn what is bad in my life into good to help others. I have to have FAITH.
I encourage you to find peace with where you are, write your list of what you want to change, start with the most important and make little right actions to change. Be patient with yourself, love yourself, and find peace with yourself. We are all human, some days we will do better than others, but we need to keep reminding ourselves of who we want to be.
iChoose Faith! Even though I will have challenges, come across struggles in my life, and find darkness trying to pull me down, I will have faith that God will bring me through. I will search daily for all the good that God has placed around me and be thankful. If you focus more on the good, the darkness will turn to light.
Sending peace, love and joy to you my friend. Sam
